High Winds and Snow On The Way

An unusually strong  jet stream currently over the Northeastern Pacific Ocean is forecast to move rapidly into the Northwestern States reaching Western Wyoming and Star Valley by Monday Night.

Following is a series of forecast maps illustrating the movement on the 150-160 kt 300mb jet stream toward Star Valley.

...HIGH WIND WATCH IN EFFECT FROM MONDAY EVENING THROUGH TUESDAY
MORNING...

* WHAT...West winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph
  possible.

* WHERE...Jackson Hole and Star Valley.

* WHEN...From Monday evening through Tuesday morning.

* IMPACTS...Damaging winds could blow down trees and power lines.
  Travel could be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Monitor the latest forecasts and warnings for updates on this
situation. Fasten loose objects or shelter objects in a safe
location prior to the onset of winds.

In addition to the very strong winds, snow will accompany the system along with
colder air.  Thus Riverton Forecast Office has also provided an advanced notice
of the difficult winter weather conditions in the nearby mountains, particularly 
Monday night.

* WHAT...Snow possible. Total snow accumulations of 4 to 8 inches
  possible. Winds could gust as high as 70 mph.

* WHERE...Teton and Gros Ventre Mountains and Salt River and
  Wyoming Ranges.

* WHEN...From Monday afternoon through Tuesday morning.

* IMPACTS...Plan on slippery road conditions. Blowing snow may
  sharply restrict visibility.
